Though Lice Cases Have Decreased, Parents Should Still Be Proactive

The Daily Comet reports that cases of head lice have decreased significantly in the last 20 years.  However, parents should continue to be vigilant about lice checks and head lice removal.  Local and school health officials still note the importance of lice checks in schools and in the home, to prevent lice infestation – especially during the back-to-school season.  September is head lice awareness month.

Lice aren’t dangerous and they don’t spread disease, however, they are highly contagious and can spread quickly from person to person, which makes schools and day care centers prime preying grounds, according to  Symptoms of head-lice infestation are usually a tickling feeling of something moving in the hair, itching of the scalp and sores on the head caused by scratching.

The decrease in lice cases may be due to better information, or less misinformation about how lice spread and how to stop them.   Over-the-counter lice repellents like our Environmental Lice Repellent Spray have improved, both in effectiveness and in safety.  The article notes, Dr. John J. Jones, a Thibodaux LA pediatrician has seen parents put kerosene, Chlorox or gasoline in the hair to treat lice – all uneffective and unsafe lice treatments.

“I don’t see that anymore,” he said.

The most important step in treating a head lice infestation is to treat the person and other family members with head lice with medication to kill the lice.  At Lice Knowing You©, we use the Shepherd method of strand by strand lice removal and nit removal to eradicate the pests.  It’s considered to be one of the most effective methods of lice removal, and we guarantee that you and your family will be lice free after only one visit.  To find out more, visit
