The LKY Scholarship for Young Women in Entrepreneurship

Lice Knowing You® is proud to be offering a scholarship to women interested in entrepreneurship for the 2023/2024 school year.

The Who, What, and Why

Hey there, welcome to Lice Knowing You®. We are the Pacific Northwest’s leading name in - you guessed it - lice removal. And while our passion is helping families deal with the absolute pain that is lice, we’re also deeply invested in something else: supporting young women in entrepreneurship. As a small business that now thrives across multiple states, we owe our success to the entrepreneurial instinct of our former owner, Nancy Gordon.

A law school graduate who worked in civil rights for more than ten years, Nancy realized the opportunity for professional lice removal services in Washington State after dealing with her daughter’s case of lice. It was during this time she became known as a “lice guru” to various friends, who often came to request her help. Disillusioned with less-than-effective at-home remedies, Nancy then began Lice Knowing You® with the goal of creating an affordable and effective solution for families dealing with lice. Also essential to Nancy’s vision was the exclusive use of non-toxic and allergy-free products - which is a standard we continue to uphold across each of our five locations.

As you can see, the Lice Knowing You® family has been built on the enterprising nature of our founder. In fact, we are living proof that incredible things come from seizing opportunities. That’s why we’re committed to paying it forward - starting with our first annual scholarship for young women interested in entrepreneurship.

Scholarship Details

To be awarded for the 2023/2024 school year, this scholarship grants one undergraduate woman $1000 for use in any way they see fit - from room and board to books to school supplies. We accept submissions from students either:

        • Enrolled at 2- or 4-year accredited university
        • OR enrolled as a high school senior who will be attending university during the 2023/2024 school year.

There are no major requirements for applicants; however, we expect students that are studying subjects unrelated to business to demonstrate their commitment to entrepreneurial endeavors in their entry video.

In the spirit of entrepreneurship, the application for this scholarship consists of a video entry in which applicants pitch to us a business idea. We ask that videos be no longer than five minutes. Anything you can do to sell us on your idea within that timeframe is fair game. Some items you might want to discuss (but don’t have to) include:

        • What type of investment will your idea require?
        • What unique value does your idea offer to your target community?
        • Understanding of competitors in your area and what implications that has for your business
        • What is your strategy for handling growth or hardship in the first year?

We are looking for entries that demonstrate a balance of ambition and realism, so we encourage you to consider (and explain!) the real-life factors your business idea will need to overcome. We can’t wait to hear what you come up with!

We also ask that you provide proof of enrollment (for example, an unofficial transcript or letter of acceptance) and your GPA. Winners will be selected primarily on the basis of how well they can flesh out and defend their business idea, but consideration will also be given to academic achievement.

You can submit your materials below. The deadline for submission is October 15, 2023; the winner will be announced at the end of November.
