The Dangers of Lice Pesticides

Pesticides can be incredibly dangerous – this is one of the reasons Lice Knowing You©, Inc carries only non-toxic, natural lice treatments, safe enough for your entire family. In fact, there have been numerous reports on the dangers of lice treatment pesticides, including the following statements from recognized authorities:

“Sometimes the medicine is worse than the disease. It is unfortunate that well intentioned parents treating their children with toxic or flammable substances have caused deaths and poisonings.”

– Department of Immunology and Infectious Diseases, Harvard School of Public Health

“There is absolutely no need to expose children to any pesticide to treat head lice.”

– Marion Moses MD, Designer Poisons

“Panicked parents who would not normally expose their children to potentially hazardous materials will apply pesticides in haste, sometimes well beyond the recommended frequency and dosages.”

– Common Sense Quarterly Report (BIRC), Fall 1998

“Never assume a pesticide is safe. Anything designed to disrupt a living organism-plant or animal-may also prove harmful to humans or other animals in unexpected ways.”

-Theo Colborn, Ph.D., Our Stolen Future

“Preparations like Rid and Kwell…are definitely toxic to people.”

-Dr. Andrew Weil, MD, Author of Ask Dr. Weil, Spontaneous Healing and Eight Weeks to Optimum Health

Applying pesticides to the scalp makes it easy for toxic substances to be absorbed directly into the blood stream, because the scalp has many blood vessels that are close to the skin. Children also have a less mature immune system to protect them, and lack the advanced enzyme systems that can process these chemicals.

The two main pesticides used most today are lindane and pyrethrins.  Lindane is highly toxic – routine use has been shown to lead to neurotoxic and blood disorders.  It has been found to be highly carcinogenic.

Pyrethrins, permethrin, and pyrethrum were once natural products, but have long since been produced as chemical imitations, adding to their killing power.  Many pyrethrin treatments contain formaldehyde – a substance now listed as carcinogenic.  Pyrethrins have been shown to cause allergic reactions, attacking the nervous system and causing skin irritations. Permethrin is one of the components in Raid House and Garden spray – and it’s used as a lice treatment at four times the concentration found in Raid.

We recommend a natural lice removal – the Shepherd Method ™ Of Strand-By-Stand Nit Removal – and it’s considered by many experts to be the most thorough and effective lice removal technique in the world.  We also offer natural lice treatment products to keep lice at bay.  With Lice Knowing You©, your family is guaranteed to be lice and nit free after only one treatment – and without all the harsh and potentially dangerous chemicals.

Preparing Your Children for Lice Treatments

We understand the strain that lice infestations put on families – and if you’re a family with special needs, lice infestation and lice removal can become a very traumatizing incident.  Lice removal doesn’t have to be difficult – no matter what.

We’ve gathered a few tips to help you talk to your children about lice:

Emotionally prepare your child for lice treatment. Do your children have friends who’ve had to go through lice treatment?  Stressing that lice are treatable, that anyone can have them, and that getting rid of them isn’t painful will help to ease anxiety.

An ounce of prevention goes a long way. Keeping around a bottle of our Citramint Environmental Lice Repellent Spray or Lice Repellent Detangler will ensure you’re prepared to prevent the infestation of lice and other insects. These products are a natural option that will repel lice before they become a problem, and they’re free of toxic chemicals and pesticides that have been linked with autism.

If your child has physical sensory issues – multiple and repeated rounds of at-home washing and combing to ensure all the nits and lice are gone can be a difficult task. It can take even longer if your child can’t sit through the rubbing, pulling and combing.  Our head lice consultants are experts at working with all children, particularly very young children and children with differing learning abilities such as autism, add/adhd, downs syndrome and cerebral palsy.

In addition, it’s a good idea to:

  1. Inform friends that your child had head lice and they should have their children checked.
  2. Tell the school nurse so a note can be sent home to parents in your child’s classroom if necessary.

Treating lice doesn’t have to be difficult.  With Lice Knowing You©, you’re guaranteed to be lice free after only one visit.  With our professional consultants on your side, you have the tools to recover from lice infestations with as little turmoil as possible. Our scientifically proven process along with our invaluable free lice education will give you back your life. With 100% guaranteed Oregon head lice treament services from our consultants, you’ll be in the best care with Lice Knowing You©.

Back to School Woes: Don’t Let Lice Get You Down

September is just around the corner, it seems, and families are gearing up to get back-to-school.  KidsHealth.org, the # 1 website for children’s health and development, says these are the top 5 illnesses parents should look out for during the school year: Pinkeye, Strep Throat, Molluscum Contagiosum, Walking Pneumonia, and Head Lice.

Lice are common among kids ages 3-12 (affecting girls more often than boys), but anyone can get this infection. It’s not a sign of poor hygiene and lice do not spread disease.  In fact, each year, approximately 6 to 12 million children in the U.S. are infested with this common, six-legged critter that feeds on human blood. After weeks at summer camps, sleepovers and sharing of personal items, back-to-school season usually is the time when head lice infestation is noticed.

We have a few tips for coping with the back-to-school season and the threat of head lice:

1. Parents should discourage sharing combs, brushes, hats, and helmets with others to help prevent the spread of lice.

2. Pick up a product like our Citramint™ Lice Repellent Everyday Conditioning and Detangling Spray or our Citramint ™ School and Play Environmental Spray.  These repellents are known to kill and/or repel head lice and other insects.

3.  Know how to spot the signs and symptoms of head lice.  In our Seattle Lice Clinic and Portland Lice Clinic, Lice Knowing You© offers a detailed “cheat” sheet so that you have all the necessary information at your fingertips. We provide you with free lice education from the moment we answer the phone!

4.  Keep our number handy!  Lice Knowing You© offers the Shepherd Method of lice removal, including wet-lice checks, which are much more effective than dry or visual lice checks.  And, if one of your immediate family members is being treated at our Portland lice clinic or our Seattle lice clinic, the rest of the immediate family will be checked at no additional charge to insure that the entire family is safe. These checks are strongly recommended, and our service is 100% guaranteed.

Instead of worrying about the spread of head lice, keep your family lice and nit free (in accordance with the “No Nit Policy”), with Lice Knowing You©.  Our scientifically proven process along with our invaluable free lice education will give you back your life. With 100% guaranteed Washington head lice treatment and Oregon head lice treament services from our consultants, you’ll be in the best care with Lice Knowing You©.
